The film is highly emotional and very romantic and includes some rather tense and upsetting scenes, not all of which necessarily relate to the central plot line.
There is something quite old fashioned about Titanic that goes beyond its historical setting, the melodramatic tone of the piece is reminiscent of many of the epic romances of the post war era, which works entirely in the movie’s favour as rather than taking the ironic romantic comedy approach plays the romance entirely straight and unashamedly over-the-top. Without this the movie’s tragic ending would simply fall flat.
