Philadelphia




Philadelphia is a 1993 American drama film that is the first steps of mainstream Hollywood films to acknowledge HIV/AIDS, homosexuality and homophobia.

It has been authored by Ron Nyswaner and directed by Jonathan Demme. The film stars Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. That it was inspired in part by story of Geoffrey Bowers, legal counsel who in 1987 sued regulations firm Baker & McKenzie for wrongful dismissal in among the initial AIDS discrimination cases.

Tom Hanks won the Academy Award for the most powerful Actor for his role in the film, whilst the song "Streets of Philadelphia" won the Academy Award for optimum Original Song. Ron Nyswaner seemed to be nominated for any Academy Award for most satisfactory Original Screenplay, but lost to Jane Campion to the Piano.

The film was the Hollywood big-budget, big-star film to tackle the condition of AIDS in the U.S. (following a TV movie And therefore the Band Played On) and signaled a shift in Hollywood films toward more realistic depictions of gays and lesbians. The film expanded its release on January 14, 1994, showing in 1,245 theaters and grossing $13,817,010 in a 4-day weekend caused by Martin Luther King Day.

Philadelphia eventually grossed $77,446,440 in North America. It's an advertisement success, becoming the 12th highest grossing film in America of 1993.
