THE DEPARTED is known as a 2006 American crime thriller film, fashioned to provide a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs.
THE film was directed by Martin Scorsese and created by William Monahan. Like Infernal Affairs before it, THE DEPARTED is renowned for its star-studded cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga, Anthony Anderson and Alec Baldwin.
It won several awards, including Oscars at the 79th Academy Awards; Best Picture, Best Director (Scorsese), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing. Wahlberg was nominated for optimum Supporting Actor but lost to Alan Arkin for his role in Little Miss Sunshine.
THE film goes on in Boston, Massachusetts, where Irish Mob boss Francis "Frank" Costello plants Colin Sullivan if you are an informant within the Massachusetts State Police. Simultaneously, the police assign undercover cop William "Billy" Costigan to infiltrate Costello's crew. When each party realizes the situation, each man tries to discover the other's true identity before his very own cover is blown.
Plot of THE DEPARTED movie is In South Boston; the state police officers is waging war on Irish-American organized crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan is associated with infiltrate the mob syndicate runs by gangland chief Frank Costello. While Billy quickly gains Costello's confidence, Colin Sullivan, a hardened young criminal which has infiltrated the state police for an informer for the syndicate, is booming for a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering details about the plans and counter-plans of the operations he has got penetrated. In case it can be clear to both the mob and the police that there's a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger to be caught and confronted with the enemy-and each must race to discover the identity of the other man in chance to save himself. But is either happy to flip on the friends and comrades they've made on their long stints undercover?
A possible rationality why Leonardo DiCaprio decided not to purchase an Oscar nomination for his performance in this movie was because the Warner Bros. Studios initially couldn't choose to favor DiCaprio over his co-stars and him in the leading actor category. THE studio favored DiCaprio leading performance in Blood Diamond (which eventually got him a nomination). DiCaprio himself refused to campaign against his male co-stars in the supporting actor category, so Warner bought no supporting actor ads for DiCaprio, and don't be handed a nomination.
