The Dark Knight

The second movie of what we now know will be Nolan’s Batman trilogy tells the storyline of Batman’s battle against what many argue is his greatest enemy, the Joker, played by Heath ledger.

A sudden casting choice Ledger was given a posthumous Academy Award for his portrayal on the Joker, after his tragic death a few months prior to the film’s theatrical release.
Ledger’s performance steals the show naturally and not merely due to the media frenzy that surrounded his passing, his Joker is genuinely terrifying, his skin tight suit and dramatic make-up drawing. Bale’s performance as Batman is exactly as you would expect, strong and powerful, which sits perfectly in contrast to Ledger’s spider-like movements.

As well as Ledger the CGI in the Dark Knight is incredible, vertigo inducing aerial shots and screen explosions help much for making this an above average superhero movie.

The narrative is a bit strained, the Joker’s  make use of those close to Batman as his weapons of preference is disturbing and deviant, it requires a lot of the focus away from the need for his character, leaving the film feeling a lot more like an origin story for two main Face (Aaron Eckhart) than other things.

Yet perhaps that is a lucky accident as Nolan has since did not recast the Joker in the check in movie The Dark Knight Rises which will be released on 2012.

Altogether it is a visually spectacular movie, with one truly great and unique performance and a dark and tragic undertone, it is really an action packed superhero movie.
